Description

Detailed bronze statuette of the enthroned Jupiter-Serapis. The originally Egyptian-Hellenistic deity is easily recognisable by the kalathos, a basket for religious ceremonies, on his head. Well worked en detail, especially the folds of the robe as well as hair and beard. The scepter in his left hand is missing. Modelled after the cult image created by the Greek artist Bryaxis in the 3rd century B.C., which was located in the Egyptian-Ptolemaic Alexandria in the Serapeion, the main sanctuary of this god. Impressive small Roman bronze, which was probably placed in a lararium and was intended to grant the protection of the deity. Intact with beautiful patina. Height 17 cm. CULTURAL ASSET.

Provenance: Provenance: South German private collection. Acquired in the 1990s on the Cologne art and antique market.
