Description
The solid socket with decorative engraving on the front, the edges reinforced with rows of beads. A faceted ring eyelet attached to the top. Two fully sculptured figures of dolphins riveted on the back, with restored fractures and minor defects near the replaced areas. Boar teeth inserted on the side. The teeth with age-related discolouration, superficial signs of abrasion and longitudinal hairline cracks. Width without teeth 6.7 cm, including teeth 19.2 cm. Technical and stylistic features are highly consistent with silver work dating to the period circa 400 and contemporary belt fittings. Exceptionally distinctive and rare object from late Roman antiquity. It may have been attached as a pendant to a standard as a military decoration.
