Terracotta with white engobe or slip coating and remnants of polychrome pigment. Tondo edged with bead and reel ornaments. In the upper third, a Gorgoneion from the front with wings on either side of the head and thick curls tumbling to the side, beneath which two serpents emerge, intertwined at the base of the neck. The field is filled with three rows of leaf-shaped aegis scales, increasing in size towards the edge. The abrasion of the slip coating on the surface consistent with its age; remnants of original pink and blue painting preserved in the hollows, the relief intact. Exceptionally fine and unusually well preserved ceramic masterpiece of Magna Graecia. Diameter 17 cm. CULTURAL ASSET.Provenance: Private French collection.
