A distinguished pair of fine flintlock pistols by Heinrich Kappel of Copenhagen, circa 1700/10

Description

Triple-stepped, smooth bore brass barrels in 12 mm calibre. Finely chased decorative tendrils and the signature „HK KOPENHAGENN” engraved on the top of the barrel. The iron tangs with delicate engraving. Domed brass lock plates with fine tendril decoration in relief. The signature „Heinrich Kappel - Kopenhagenn” repeated around the frizzen spring. Iron cocks and frizzens with raised, chiselled floral ornaments. Openwork lock side plates, the heads of the lock screws with finely chased décor. Intricately carved walnut full stocks, the brass furniture with scant remnants of gilding. Pommel caps with three-dimensional lion mascarons. Wooden ramrods with dark horn tips. Length of each 54.5 cm. Heinrich Kappel is documented as a gunsmith in Copenhagen from 1674 to 1718. Appointed gunsmith to the Danish court in 1699.
