A German small-sword with chiselled hilt, circa 1740

Description

The slender, double-edged thrusting blade of lenticular section, turning to flattened diamond section with a flattened medial ridge. Fine floral ornaments etched over two thirds of the blade on both sides. A coat of arms cartouche with star at the root, scant traces of gilding in the hollows. The guard entirely covered in chiselled rocaille ornaments in relief on a finely chased gold background. The raised elements further accentuated with fine dotted decorative lines inlaid in gold. Original grip with fine copper wire winding (loose, warped), one silver Turk's head preserved. Length 92 cm.
