A significant Italian silver-mounted officer's schiavona with Prussian sword blade, 17th/18th century

Description

Sturdy double-edged sword blade of flattened hexagonal section, the edges slightly jagged in places. At the base silver strip with engraved inscription "MEFECIT POTSDAM 1729 - NON SOLI CEDIT 1729" inlaid on each side. Reused iron basket hilt (slightly pitted) from the 17th century. Grip with fine chequering. Silver cat’s head pommel in fine relief with flower décor. Original leather-covered wooden scabbard with silver chape with floral decoration in relief and silver reinforcement bands. Length 103 cm. In the 18th century, the originally Venetian schiavona was much sought after by officers as a fashionable sidearm.
