An Italian cup-hilted rapier with openwork guard, mid 17th century

Description

Narrow thrusting blade of flattened diamond section, deep fullers on both sides of the upper quarter, struck with the signature "xx HEINRICH xx DEINGER xx". The slightly fullered ricasso with a mark stamped on the obverse (swan). The lavishly openworked cup hilt with finely chiselled and engraved floral decoration. A depiction of a bird on the obverse, a Nereid on the opposite side. A small repair with brass solder on the upper edge on the reverse. Openwork guard plate (Guarde de Polvo). The extended, straight quillons with knuckle bow and fine, offset finials. The original grip spirally fluted, with iron wire winding and Turk's heads. Round, openwork pommel with offset riveted button. Length 125.5 cm.
