A German dagger of Landsknecht type, circa 1560/70

Description

The double-edged blade of lenticular cross-section, the surfaces lightly pitted. The short quillons angled toward the blade with a large, domed guard plate, a short guard plate with a turned and roped edge on the opposite side. Conical, wooden grip with spiral flutes and iron ferrule, the wire winding has been lost. Openwork petal-shaped pommel cap. The leather-covered wooden scabbard with brass-soldered iron furniture. The front made of openwork, a drop-forged pommel at the chape. Two movable suspension loops on the side. Inserted by-knife, the iron hilt forged as one piece with decorative tendrils inlaid in brass on both sides, the split pommel with a riveted, wooden insert. Matching iron awl. Length 46 cm.
