Description

Typically curved, single-edged blade forged in finely figured wootz-Damascus. Chiselled foliage decoration on a finely chased gold background on the root and spine of the blade, extending to the yelman. A calligraphic cartouche on the obverse, an appliquéd maker's mark in gold on the opposite side. Mounting circa 1840. Finely engraved quillons and grip frame in fire-gilt silver, riveted rhinoceros horn grip plates. Original textile lanyard with tassel still attached. Velvet-covered wooden scabbard, the velvet heavily worn and damaged. A decorative border embroidered in silver wire on one side. Heavy fittings forged in fire-gilt brass, finely engraved with ornate tendrils. Two movable suspension rings, the original carrying cord still attached. Length 86 cm. Similar pieces are illustrated in "Gold und Damszenerstahl", the exhibition catalogue of Veste Coburg, 2024, p. 177 ff.
