A South German basket-hilted campaign sword, circa 1570

Description
Sturdy, double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section, cut with double shallow fullers on each side of the root. The cutting edge notched in places. A mark struck on the obverse of the ricasso, two rows of Pi marks in the grooves. Lattice basket hilt with straight, extended quillons, thumb ring and finger rests. Original, leather-covered hilt, flat, rectangular pagoda-shaped pommel with spirally fluted, riveted button. Length 104.5 cm. The stamped mark can probably be attributed to the Stantler family, swordsmiths from Passau, as it appears to be a reversed duplication of their documented mark (crescent and cross).
