Description

Awarded to SS Standartenfuhrer Walter Harzer shortly after the Normandy Invasion in June. Light version, four hollow rivet construction; double-overlaid sunburst pattern with eight points; the center with a black, enameled, rotated (mobile) swastika, with the enameling well preserved without chipping of any kind; within a stamped, silvered circular wreath impressed with oak leaves, ribbons and the introduction year “1941”; the inner and outer sides of the wreath feature thin red enameled rings with a silver core in the middle; the reverse plain but with a broad vertical pinback with a functional barrel hinge and a thick, slightly rounded catch; marked “20” for “Fritz Zimmermann, Stuttgart” on the underside of the pin; measuring approximately 63.02 mm x 63.07 mm; weighing 45 g; black issue case constructed of thick cardstock covered with a black leatherette paper; typical continuous gold line around upper lid and moderate abrasions on surface; interior lid covered in white silk; lower tray with moderate age to interior; strong hinge and push button catch; measuring approximately 107.5 mm x 108.5 mm x 27.6 mm.
SS-Obersturmbannführer and Ia (operations officer) Walter Harzer was awarded the German Cross on 19th August 1944.
