Description
Oil on canvas and stretcher frame. A male duck lying on a table, next to it a pile of pewter plates with garlic bulbs, a pewter ewer with a glass of water and onions. Signed and dated on the lower right "Padua 1940". Dimensions of picture 77 x 107 cm. In gilt wood frame 125 x 95 cm.Paul Mathias Padua is among the most successful artists of the NS era and displayed a total of 23 paintings in the Great German Art Exhibitions between 1938 andof 1944, among them still lives, portraits, and propaganda pieces such as "Der Führer spricht" or "Der 10. Mai 1940".He received the Georg Schicht Prize in 1928, the Albrecht Dürer Prize of the City of Nuremberg in 1930, and the Lenbach Prize of the City of Munich in 1937 and 1940. He was a war painter in a propaganda company at the Western Front, and painted celebrities such as Franz Lehar, Gerhart Hauptmann, but also General von Reichenau, and Benito Mussolini. He moved to Austria in 1943, was represented at the exhibition (tr.) "German Artists and the SS" in 1944 and was "denazified" in Austria. He returned to the Tegernsee in Germany in 1951 and painted celebrities such as Friedrich Flick, Herbert von Karajan or Franz Josef Strauß.Condition: II + Questions about the lot?
