Bronze with a brown patina, the plinth signed "J. Uphues". Two hallmarks with imperial crowns in a circle on the back of the integrally cast pedestal (small crack). Fully sculptured, standing, full-length figure of Kaiser Wilhelm I in uniform, including his helmet, full regalia and greatcoat, holding his binoculars in his right hand. Realistic reproduction of the subject's facial features. Slightly damaged in places, signs of age and use. Overall height 64 cm, weight 12.3 kg. Joseph Uphues studied at the Berlin Academy under Reinhold Begas and Fritz Schaper in 1878, subsequently a student in Begas' master class in 1882. He became an independent sculptor in 1892. He was awarded the title of professor in 1899 and became a member of the Berlin Secession.Condition: II Questions about the lot?
