The fully sculptured, larger-than-life sized head in dark grey andesite. The face of the Buddha beautifully crafted with downcast eyes, exuding an aura of internalisation, peace and dignity. The hair is arranged in fine curls, bound to form an ushnisha. Mounted on a modern pedestal. Height 41 cm, overall height 49 cm.Provenance: From the collection of Joseph Maximilian Hartl (1888-1957), German consul in Fuzhou as of 1925. By all accounts, he acquired this head during his first visit to Borobudur in February 1912. The head has been part of a South German family estate ever since.
