Iron cutlery consisting of a knife and a two-pronged fork. The polished blade featuring on one side a deeply chiselled Renaissance style hunting scene. Both handles chiselled all-over, on either side a hunting scene, fine scrolling leaves on the sides. The short handle of the two-pronged fork also chiselled with scrolling leaves, the lower edge of the fork handle signed "J.Batsche". Associated leather covered wood scabbard with iron mounts finely chiselled on the obverse. The locket with quadrangular carrying loop on the reverse. Length of knife 20.5 cm, of fork 19.5 cm, overall length 24 cm.
Superb iron chiselling with minute, only about 10 mm tall figures. Probably a showpiece for a word fair or similar event. In the directory of artists only the Viennese engraver and stone cutter Anton Batsche (1826-97) is listed, "J. Batsche" is probably a relative.
