Description
Bronze with a dark patina; the larger-than-life depiction is signed “J.F. Rogge” at the back of the neck, and the plinth bears the foundry stamp “Lenz.” Height approx. 53 cm. This bust, along with a death mask, was created for the planned Nietzsche Memorial Hall in Weimar, which was intended to house the Nietzsche Archive. Dr. Johannes Friedrich Rogge (1898–1983) initially studied the natural sciences before turning to the fine arts in 1922. Despite achieving success at the Berlin Art Exhibition, commissions failed to materialize, and he closed his studio. It was not until he modeled a bust of Hitler in 1938 that he achieved success, leading to commissions for busts of Rosenberg, Ludendorff, Telschow, Hauptmann, and Göring. In 1943, he was commissioned by the Nietzsche Archive to create a larger-than-life bust of the philosopher and poet; it was subsequently exhibited in 1944 at the Great German Art Exhibition (Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung) at the House of German Art (Haus der Deutschen Kunst).Condition: II Questions about the lot?
