Description

Bronze with a deep brown patina. Frederick the Great depicted in uniform, wearing a tricorne hat and holding a walking stick (loose); beside him are two Italian Greyhounds—one seated, the other standing. The round base is signed “M. Bauer” on the side. Mounted separately on a red marble plinth with a black marble base plate. Sculpture height: 26.5 cm; total height: 37.3 cm. M. Bauer, a German sculptor of the 19th and 20th centuries. The work was evidently inspired by the statuette of the King with his Italian Greyhounds—Alcmène and Hasenfuß—created by Johann Gottfried Schadow (designed in 1816, cast in 1821/22).
