Description
Bronze helmet with full-faced tin plating, which is in outstanding condition apart from minimal corrosion pitting, mostly on raised edges. The skull is divided into two lobes by a central ridge and offset from the lower part of the helmet by a distinct section that retracts inwards. The lower section embellished with contoured ribs in repoussé at the ear and eye cut-outs. A lancet-shaped nasal bar between the eyebrows. Behind the ear cut-outs, the edge of the helmet curves slightly downwards over 5 cm, then transitions in the rear section of the skull, set slightly upwards, into a neck guard up to 4 cm wide, projecting almost horizontally and curving slightly upwards. The cheek pieces are attached to the skull by a five-part hinge, two bushings belonging to each cheek piece. The associated cheek pieces present but detached. The right cheek piece with tension cracks and a small chip on the rear edge. Overall an excellently preserved, aesthetically pleasing antique helmet with no missing parts or additions. The helmet type is a regional variation on the later Chalcidian helmets from the northern Black Sea area. Height without cheek pieces 23.7 cm. Maximum width at the rear end of the ear cut-out 22 cm. Length 25.8 cm. N.B. CULTURAL ASSETProvenance: French private collection, acquired in the German art trade during the 1990s.
