Description

Oil on canvas, lined. Signed lower left “J. F. Engel.” Animated history or battle scene with a diagonal compositional structure and advancing infantry with bayonet rifles and flags; the depicted flat visor caps (kepis), cut of uniforms, and armament are militarily and historically consistent with the American Civil War. Loose, sketchy handling with a study-like character. Slightly oxidized varnish; age-related craquelure, particularly in the lighter background areas; localized paint layer detachments and losses (a visibly larger paint loss with exposed ground), edge abrasion with losses along the tacking margins; partial older retouches probable; isolated pressure marks and compression traces in the paint application as well as surface soiling and minor abrasion. Dimensions 58 × 47 cm. Johann Friedrich Engel studied, among other places, in Karlsruhe and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
