Description
Rectangular box enamelled in white, the gilding on the copper mounting in beautiful condition. A view of Hubertusburg Castle on the domed lid, above which an angel with trumpets, proclaiming peace, the gold inscription on the lower edge reads „Hubertusburg D.15.Febr. MDCCLXIII."The interior with a depiction of Pax with an ear of corn and a sceptre, as well as a farmer ploughing in the background, above which the inscription „Iam redire audet" (Already, he dares to return), with Germania Pacata" (Germany at peace) underneath. Both depictions modelled on the "Peace of Hubertusburg" medal by Johann Ludwig Oexlein (1715 - 1787). Idyllic depictions of castles and palaces on the sides and base. The interior with a partially retouched crack in the enamel and superficial craquelure, the exterior virtually undamaged. Dimensions 85 x 65 x 35 mm. Beautifully preserved and extremely rare snuffbox commemorating the Peace Treaty between Prussia, Austria and Saxony, which was signed at Hubertusburg Castle to the east of Leipzig. The Treaty ended the Seven Years' War within the Holy Roman Empire and was also ratified by Frederick the Great a few days later.Condition: II + Questions about the lot?
