Description
Trapezoid body of walnut wood, the bevelled edges decorated with finely cut scale pattern. Profusely covered with decorative inlays of engraved and partly coloured bone. On one side central depiction of the hunting goddess Diana, surrounded by scrollwork with grotesque heads. On the opposite side a landscape with huntsman. Old inventory number engraved on the lateral upper edge. Fittings of fire-gilt bronze in rich relief (one screw missing), mascarons and figures amidst scrollwork. Spout with two figurative thumb pieces, one spring defective. On the bottom finely engraved Saxon escutcheon amidst grotesque figures and tendrils. Four iron suspension loops on the sides with original green carrying cord. Height 23.5 cm.Provenance: Gallery Fischer Lucerne, auction on 24th June 1974, lot 87. The powder flask was the cover image of the auction catalogue and was sold for 60,000 SFr. Previously part of the von Rothschild collection.
