A monumental Apostle candelabra, Southern Germany, circa 1500

Description

Galvanized iron-sheet. Three-level construction with large bowl to catch wax. Surrounded by twelve candle sticks with candle holders on top. In the middle there is an especially strong spout for the central candle, a hexagonal central piece with embossed blossom rosettes and a castle-shaped finial with four small Gothic towers. Defects, damage and additions. Diameter circa 60 cm, height 135 cm (with loop, without chain). During WW2 this candelabra was on loan in the Munich City Museum. There are two related candelabra in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich (MA 3451/52), originating from two churches in the Dachau area.
