Lot 24

"Saint Margaret", Anonymous (probably South German or Flemish), circa 1700, oil on copper

Works of Art, Antiquities & Ancient Art | A108kua | Live auction | 490 Lots

Description

Oil on copper. A small-scale depiction of St. Margaret as a standing full-length figure holding a crosier and a red sash, with the dragon at her feet. A serene composition focused on the central figure against a landscape-like background with a low horizon. Smooth, finely glazed application of paint with nuanced rendering of the flesh tones and softly rendered light-and-shadow effects. The fabrics of the garments are rendered in warm ochre, brown, and gray/blue tones, with deliberate accents. The painting style corresponds to small-format copperplate painting around 1700, as was common in southern Germany under the influence of Flemish models. Framed in a profiled, gilded wooden frame with signs of wear due to age and use. Copper plate is flat, with no visible deformations. The paint layer is intact, with an even varnish coating and an age-related surface patina. On the reverse, a wooden beam of the inner frame is missing. Overall, in good, stable condition. Image dimensions 20 x 15.5 cm, frame dimensions 27.6 x 22.6 cm.
