Description
The large, heavy block of green and black marble carved by hand in the shape of a rock monument. A small pedestal with polished edges at the top, holding the bronze sculpture of an eagle in flight (somewhat loose). The square pedestal of the monument also with polished edges. A bronze dedication plaque in the form of a shield with laurel branches appliquéd on the front, inscribed "Gli Italiani di Rio de Janeiro a Italo Balbo - 6-1-1931 - IX", along with a gilt, partially enamelled "PNF" badge. Overall height 55 cm, dimensions of the pedestal 25.5 x 25.5 cm, weight 40 kg. After World War I, Italo Balbo experienced a meteoric rise within the PNF, becoming commander of the Militia Volontaria, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Economy and the Regia Aeronautica and, in 1929, – without any previous flying experience – Minister of Aviation. As Minister of Aviation, he initiated a flight across the South Atlantic from Orbetello to Rio de Janeiro with aircraft engineer Alessandro Marchetti. On 17 December 1930, twelve seaplanes took off to accompany Balbo and his co-pilot, arriving late in Rio de Janeiro on 15 January 1931 after a number of losses and delays. Magnificent gift of honour.
