Description

Dark patinated bronze with integrated plinth; signed and dated "THORAK 1942" on the plinth. A compact, block-like composition of an intertwined seated nude couple with idealized, muscularly modeled anatomy and smoothed surface transitions. The figures are closely intertwined, forming an inward-facing grouping with reduced physiognomic differentiation and emphasized body sculpture. The surface shows some softer modeling details; technically executed as a hollow cast with an open underside and visible casting structure. Condition includes superficial abrasions, patina irregularities, minor scratches, and localized wear on exposed areas. Dimensions approx. 28 x 28.5 x 16 cm. Josef Thorak was an Austrian-German sculptor whose figurative sculptures are characterized by an idealized conception of the body and closed compositional forms. Between 1938 and 1942, he was represented with numerous sculptures at the Great German Art Exhibitions in Munich. Attention: Self-collection only, or please request a shipping quote before bidding!
