Description

Elegantly curved, sturdy, single-edged blade (stained in places), fullered on both sides with a double-edged pandour point. Etched leaf decoration (over-polished), with a dedication in the upper section, later refreshed with gold leaf „POR SU BRILLANTE VICTORIA DE AYACUCHO / LA REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA AL GENERAL SUCRE". Knuckle-bow hilt in gilt, non-ferrous metal with lavish relief decoration and lion's head pommel, an octagonal shield and fasces with banner reading „REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA" in the centre of the quillons. The opposite side with a Phrygian cap, inscribed „LIBERTA", smooth mother-of-pearl grip scales. Gilt non-ferrous metal scabbard (abraded, minor dents), two movable suspension rings on ring bands in relief with octagonal shields and fasces. Gilding on the pommel and scabbard almost completely worn off. The locket inserted separately at the top. Slightly damaged in places, signs of age. Length 92 cm. Antonio José de Sucre y Alcalá was a South American freedom fighter and successful General, serving under Simón Bolívar. His most important battle was the one at Ayacucho on 9 December 1824, which Sucre fought in the absence of Bolívar and which concluded the independence aspirations of the former viceroyalties of New Granada and Peru. Sucre was awarded the title Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho by Bolívar in honour of his achievement. The state of Gran Colombia included the present-day states of Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela, as well as parts of Peru and Guyana, and existed from 1819/23 to 1830. Its official name was „República de Colombia". The sabre in this auction is an unparalleled, high-ranking weapon of historical interest relating to the South American freedom movement.
