Works of Art, Antiquities & Ancient Art | A108kua | Live auction | 1169 Lots

Description

Iron blade of a throwing axe with an S-shaped upper edge. The cutting edge curves slightly downward and is distinctly extended upward, where it terminates in a horizontal edge. The rear portion of the axe blade features a square-sectioned socket that is closed at the top and does not have a through-hole for the shaft. A curved wooden handle has been modernly mounted into the socket. The elegantly curved axe blade has been professionally restored and stabilized and, with the tasteful reconstruction of the handle, presents an attractive overall appearance. Length of the iron axe blade: 22.5 cm. Height of the reconstructed weapon with the modernly added axe handle: 51.5 cm. CULTURAL ASSET!

Provenance: From the Axel Guttmann collection (inventory no AG 92), acquired in the 1980s from the German Art market.
