Description

Round barrel of fine Damascus steel with flattened midrib, smooth bore in 16 mm calibre. Silver inlaid signature "Johann Schifter", a part of the edge trim missing. At the breech a chiselled mascaron and ornamental silver inlays. Lock with finely etched trophies. Silver front-sight, brass saddle back-sight. Flintlock with finely etched trophies. Lightly carved full stock of finely grained walnut, the fore-end with slightly visible crack. Nose cap of light coloured horn. Chiseled and engraved iron furniture of high quality, decorated with trophies and grotesques. Vacant escutcheon. Original ramrod with horn tip. Length 56.5 cm. Johann Schifter operated in Wiener Neustadt from 1694 - 1730. Cf. Der neue Stöckel, p. 1122.
