A German Kulissenschnepper or slurbow, Halle, dated 1718

Description
Slender, blackened steel prod (unmarked, abraded, traces of rust). The textile string is an older replacement. The anchors removed, the prod held by a semi-circular wooden wedge inserted laterally. Lavishly embellished walnut tiller with engraved bone inlays and iron fittings, a screw-mounted, bone-inlaid bolt channel. The sides with intricately engraved and bone-inlaid tendrils and hunting scenes, showing horseman firing their pistols. The engraved bone cartouche on the neck of the stock reads "C : P : 1718 : Halle :". A crack in the forearm repaired in the 19th century with iron clamps. Iron tension ring, laterally sliding fixed rear sight in bone (damaged), bead front sight also in bone (renewed). The flap lock needs adjusting, intact double set trigger. Damaged in places, signs of handling and age. Length 69 cm, width of the bow 55 cm. Exceptionally ornate. Can easily be improved by careful restoration. Up until the 18th century, the citizens of Halle an der Saale had a crossbowmen's society, whose shooting range was located at today's Leipzig Tower.Condition: II - III Questions about the lot?
