Round, openworked head in gilt silver. A border of fully sculptured lion mascarons between decorative tendrils and shells. Set with high cabochons of precious stones (almandine and spinel?). The end plate with the coat of arms of Prince George I. Rakoczi in relief, inscribed "Soli deo gloria 1631" around the edge and his monogram "GR". The slightly conical shaft covered in velvet, the long socket and sleeve made of gilt silver with hammered and engraved floral décor, lavishly set with cabochons. Length 53.5 cm, weight 1467 g. This mace is one of a small collection of magnificent, 17th century style maces that were produced in the mid-19th century. Closely linked to the national movement of the time, they were presented as tokens of honour and gifts of state. One of these maces was presented in reverence to Kaiser Franz Joseph I at his coronation as King of Hungary in 1867 by the goldsmiths' guild of Pest. Today, it can be found in the collection of the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest (inv. no. 54.1956). Another mace from the Philippe Missillier Collection was sold by Sotheby's for £82,500 (incl. premium) in April this year.Provenance: Auktion bei Sotheby's, 8. Juni 1951, Los Nr. 44 c.
