An Ottoman silver-mounted shamshir with a fine wootz blade, dated 1817

Description

The strongly curved, single-edged blade forged in finely figured wootz-Damascus, the point lightly re-sharpened. A gold-inlaid cartouche with signature and date 1233 (=1817) on the obverse. Gold-inlaid leafy vine decoration on both sides at the root of the blade. Engraved silver quillons. Light-coloured horn grip scales with rivets and silver grip frames. Leather-covered wooden scabbard, decorative stitching in silver wire. Finely engraved silver furniture, the chape and locket both with assayer's mark and stamped tughra mark. Length 87.5 cm.
