Cal. .36(BlackPowder), SN. 16453, matching numbers on all parts originally numbered! Octagonal 7½" barrel, mostly bright, a few minor frosted areas. Six shots. The barrel rib marked "Address.Col.Colt.London", the barrel web ahead of the wedge marked with broad arrow above "WD" (War Department). In contrast to US-made revolvers the grips straps are not made of brass, but of iron. The original finish gone, entirely reworked and polished, with some minor pitting left. Smooth walnut grips from the same model gun, but most likely replaced as they don't fir 100%, as were the grip strap bolts, which have blued heads (no other bolt on this gun does). Rare! At the outbreak of the Crimean War the British War Department ordered 23700 Colt Navy 1851 in spite of their small calibre. Delivery took place from March 1854 to February 1856. Approx. 5000 were sent to the Crimean Army, most of the others to the Royal Navy, some to the Army. At the end of the war most Crimean revolvers were privatized, proofed and received a double broad arrow privatization mark. Since this revolvers features neither one nor the other, it must have found another way into private hands. These guns are much harder to come by then their US counterparts!
