A prehistoric trepanation disc with depiction of the Pleiades(?), Urnfield period, 12th – 9th century B.C.

Description
Oval trepanation disc used to surgically remove a section of a human skull. The edges of the disc smoothed retroactively, whereby remnants of the bone suture are still visible in one place. The disc with seven specifically arranged perforations, the spacing corresponds surprisingly closely to a trepanation disc from the Urnfield burial ground at Künzing. In turn, the arrangement of the perforations on both trepanation discs resembles the illustration of a star cluster on the Bronze Age Nebra Sky Disc, which has been interpreted as representing the Pleiades. Length 4.5 cm. Extremely interesting artefact from both a cultural and historical perspective.Provenance: From a South German private collection, inherited in the early 2000s from the consignor's father, who died in 2013.
