A long case for bronze writing utensils, one end flat, the other convex. The top also slightly convex. On the convex side, an inset compartment can be pulled out, originally containing the writing instruments. When closed, all sides are embellished with silver-inlaid inscriptions, interspersed with lavish floral ornamentation. On the top, flanked by two medallions featuring birds (probably peacocks), two antithetical hybrid creatures with the body of a wild cat, wings and a helmeted human head. The tails extending out into unicorn heads. Floral ornaments fill the interspaces between the creatures. A trefoil-shaped slot at the circular end, behind which a stylised fleur-de-lys and foliage. Length 20.8 cm. The qalamdan in exceptionally good condition, executed with the finest craftsmanship and highly accomplished calligraphy.Provenance: Belgian private collection, acquired in the art trade in the Benelux Countries at the beginning of the millennium.
