Orders and Military Collectibles from 1919 onwards | A106r | Live auction | 852 Lots

Description

The watercolours and drawings rendered in watercolours, charcoal, pencil, coloured pencil or sanguine. Varying formats, between 15 x 11 cm and 47 x 35 cm. Some signed, most titled. The motifs include military scenes, villages along the advance, churches, architecture, landscapes and people. From Russia, centred in and around Stalingrad, but also Plovdiv, Assenovgrad (Bulgaria), Markowo-Wólka (Poland), Bohuslav, Mariupol (Ukraine), Pawłówka, along with several holiday views from Austria and Italy, dating from the pre- or post-war period. Moreover, a handwritten letter from Dohlen, dated 1941, in Polish. Some of the pages damaged along the edge damage or with remnants of adhesive tape, some in passepartouts. Fascinating estate from a war artist, giving remarkable insight into events during the war and outside the war zones. Dohlen appears to have sent many pictures to his family, who probably lived in Danzig, where this collection was found after the war.
