Description

The rare "Meteor Medal" (German Atlantic Expedition 1925 - 1927 commemorative medal), no ribbon, in the original presentation case. Photograph album (measuring 27 x 32 x 2.5 cm) dated 1925/26 with approx. 200 photos in different formats, some labelled, including Cape Town, Cameroon, Cape Verde islands, Mindello, the "Meteor" at sea, Buenos Aires etc. Moreover, a photo album (27 x 34 x 2 cm) with approx. 430 photos (mostly 6 x 9 cm), some labelled, including Buenos Aires, the "Garibaldi" cruiser, Cape Town, Brazil, scenes on board, men in uniform etc. Another 40 photos enclosed separately, including commissioning of the "Meteor" in 1924, Hindenburg and portraits of Remwolt. Certificate for crossing the equator on the "Meteor" issued to Obersignalgast Paul Remwolt (11 May 1925). Certificate issued by the Reichsmarine to Signalmaat Paul Remwolt in recognition of his service (29 November 1921 - 31 March 1934). A glass-framed photo of the "Meteor" (measuring 30 x 40 cm). A certificate issued to Obermechaniker-Gast Rateiski on "crossing the line" on the battleship "Deutschland" (26 March 1935). Two coloured photos of Rio circa 1925, both framed under glass (measuring 20 x 50 cm). A photo souvenir of Leipzig. Slightly damaged in places, signs of handling and age. Unparalleled estate of historical interest from a participant in the German Atlantic Expedition 1925 - 1927. The expedition symbolised the transition from descriptive to physical oceanography. The "Meteor" was laid on keel as a gunboat in Gdańsk in 1914, but was converted into a survey vessel after the war, put into service in 1924 and sent on its spectacular mission.
