A long Dutch wheellock pistol, circa 1640/50

Description
Slender barrel, octagonal then round, with smooth bore in 13.5 mm calibre. The breech struck with "IK". Lock with slightly domed plate, spring-loaded pan cover with release button. The wheel with finely engraved mark "S" to indicate the cocking position. Ebony (?) stock, the lower part of the butt an old replacement. Small crack between trigger guard and lock, several minor shrinkage cracks along the forestock. Smooth iron furniture. Original ramrod of ebonised wood with iron tip. Length 69.5 cm. The mark "IK" might be ascribed to the gunsmith Jan Kitsen, who worked in Maastricht around 1640/50. Another possible interpretation would be Jan Knoop (1615-88), who is recorded as gunsmith in Utrecht. A similar pistol from his workshop was part of the Visser Collection, see vol.
