A South German Dussäge (Tesack) with Passau blade, circa 1580

Description
Sturdy, slightly curved, single-edged blade with a double-edged point. Double shallow fullers on both sides below the spine. On the reverse, a fine-toothed Passau wolf mark with remnants of the copper inlays and an unidentified mark in the shape of a shield. Next to it, a master's monogram "MW", plus a double "S" between small cross marks struck in the fuller. Typical, blackened basket hilt with extended, S-shaped, curved quillons. Finger rests and thumb ring on the reverse, swept hilt with a large, closed panel on the obverse. The leather-covered grip is a good replacement, minor worm damage. Rectangular pagoda-shaped pommel with flat, offset riveted button. Length 105.5 cm.Provenance: From a South German private collection, formerly in the Bischof collection in Vienna.
