Description
Large, wrought-iron stirrup in the shape of a cross with elaborate floral incisions on either side. Sturdy eye at top. Small, old loss and repair on the tread, one brass trim preserved. Height 47 cm. These exquisitely crafted but ultimately impractical stirrups were part of the sumptuous equipment of Mexican cavalrymen in the 18th century. They were banned there in 1778 because of the danger they posed to bystanders. Similar pieces can be found in numerous international museums, such as the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (inv. no. 37.117).Condition: II - Questions about the lot?
