Broad double-edged blade with rounded point, the upper quarter with flat fuller on each side. Finely etched décor on both sides. The fuller with motto (tr.) "I wish that every man may live in virtue – that his blood should never stain this blade of iron", surmounted on one side by a depiction of Lady Justice and an applied wheel. The opposite side with depiction of a decapitation above a gallows. Inscription "Froon Meester Jacob Stoeff" on the short ricasso. Straight brass quillons with offset finials. Grip with leather cover over cord wrap, braided Turks’ heads of silver wire. Pear-shaped brass pommel with offset riveted finial. Length 110.5 cm. Jacob Stoeff was executioner of the city of Hamburg between 1664 and 1685. At that time, the term "Fronmeister" was also used as a synonym for the executioner.Condition: II Questions about the lot?
