Lot 5040

A hand cannon modelled after the Dresden "Mönchsbüchse", collector's replica in the style of circa 1500

Fine Antique and Modern Firearms | A83s | Live auction | 725 Lots

Description

Slightly conically tapered, after chiselled girdles facetted and widening barrel in 16.5 mm calibre. Bolted to the right side a slightly chiselled housing with pan for the friction rod which is necessary to ignite the spark with the pyrite. With a curved, hinged, also lightly chiselled hammer into which the pyrite is placed and which is connected to the housing by way of a ring bolt. Breech plug with applied belt hook. Length 45.5 cm.
The original of this hand cannon with friction rod ignition is part of the collection of the Dresden Armory. Even though research on its exact time of origin is still performed to date, it is not only a comparatively early, but doubtlessly also very advanced firearm.
