Description

First type of the badge in finest workmanship. The Luftwaffe eagle of white gold with separately applied swastika, diamonds (both sides exposed to daylight) set à jour (one stone missing), the reverse reinforced with a golden grid plate fastened with two screws. The wreath of yellow gold with polished and finely punched details, the pin attachment system with safety closure, surmounted by the mark of fineness "585", underneath it incised "3" (jeweller’s production number?). Width of eagle’s wings 62 mm, width of wreath 40.5 mm. Weight 43.5 g.
High-quality jeweller’s workmanship crafted in fine detail. Like all original diamond decorations of this era, these so-called "double badges" in gold and with diamonds were manufactured by the company "Deutsche Goldschmiedekunst-Werkstätten Berlin" (DGW). They were awarded by Hermann Göring from 1935 onwards to members of the Luftwaffe closely connected to him, in particular to all field marshals and diamond winners of the Knight's Cross, but also to other celebrities of the Third Reich and of friendly states. In October 1939, these badges were declared the official award of the Luftwaffe and the Deutsches Reich. There were approximately 40 - 50 bestowals.
