Description

Clock in gilded bronze with depiction of the king of Prussia Frederick the Great (Frederick II). Japy Frères-clock movement with silk thread suspension not in working order, damaged enamelled dial, missing pendulum and key. Right end cap of base engraved “Unserem Führer Adolf Hitler - von einer alten schlesischen Parteigenossin - Johanna Behrends, August 1932”. (tr. "Our leader Adolf Hitler, from an old Silesian party member, Johanna Behrends, August 1932".). According to consignor reports gift of Magda Goebbels, though we have been unable to confirm. Magda Goebbels (born November 11, 1901 in Berlin as Johanna Maria Magdalena Behrend, from 1908 Friedländer, from 1920 Ritschel, 1921 – 1931 Quandt; died May 1, 1945 in Berlin) was the wife of the National Socialist politician Joseph Goebbels. She was stylized propagandistically as the model mother of the Third Reich by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. A prominent member of the Nazi Party, she was a close ally, companion, and political supporter of Adolf Hitler who became a close family friend and often visited the couple and their children in Berlin. The Goebbels family were also frequently invited to Hitler's private residence in Obersalzberg. Again and again Magda and Hitler spent time together even without Joseph Goebbels, sometimes for days. It is unknown whether the relationship between the two was also intimate at times. Longerich describes the constellation as a "triangular relationship". Dimensions circa 29.5 x 31.5 x 10.1 cm, weight 5.3 kg.
