German Historical Collectibles from 1919 onwards | A79r | Live auction | 787 Lots
Description
Partially dismantled engine housing without starter, external components, cowling, etc. The 8-stage axial compressor with housing was detached from the thrust chamber with the turbine rotor, most probably to facilitate transportation, the fuel injection nozzle separately enclosed. Evident signs of wear and tear. Comes with a folder of well-researched documents, as e.g. copies of construction designs as well as documents about restorations of other engines. The Junkers Jumo 004 is the world's first jet engine mature enough to go into serial production, which started in February 1944. By the end of the war, 4,750 engines of versions B1 and B2 had been delivered to the Luftwaffe, mostly for use in the Me 262 jet fighter.
Its axial compressor and turbine were ground-breaking concepts for their time, and this design proved itself markedly superior to contemporary Allied designs. After the end of the Second World War development and production of this engine continued outside Germany, well into the 1960ies, leading to significant improvements such as the afterburner. During the war, however, war-induced lack of high-quality metal alloys, tested and approved for engine components subjected to high stress, saw more and more parts made of so-called "Sparstoffe" (Ersatz - material), which reduced the service life of an engine to a few hours only. A high rate of consumption, significant losses through bombardement and downing of aircraft, high demand by the victorious Allies to get their hands on as many engines as possible for examination and testing, but also the post-war need for metals of all kinds reduced the number of engines that persisted to this day to only a handful. The sample on sale here is most likely the last of its kind still in private hands and accessible to the aircraft enthusiast!Condition: III - Questions about the lot?
