Description
Privately purchased piece. Black lacquered leather shell with fire-gilt mounts of non-ferrous metal. Held by cotter pins a Saxon helmet plate with gilt star and silver-plated coat of arms of silvered nickel silver. Flat leather-lined chinscales on push-through rosettes, both metal cockades of typical Saxon form. Base with four star-head retainers and tall, smooth, detachable spike. Greyish-green silk rep lining (small tears) and brown leather sweatband, red/green underlay to the visors, the rear spine marked "W.G" and "55" (size), handwritten on the inside of the shell the old size number "55" and date "1/10 08". Oblong loss to the lacquer on the right side at back, hairline cracks around the base, visors with traces of heat exposure. Shoulder boards of silver bullion with green stripes, metal numbers, crown buttons and red cloth lining. Elegant, used helmet from the family, given its age in good condition.Condition: II Questions about the lot?
