Description

A total of 25 original paper seals, among them the Grand Masters Jean de Valette (1557 - 1568), Alof de Wignacourt (1601 - 1622), Martin de Redin (1657 - 1660), Manoel de Vilhena (1722 - 1736), Pinto de Fonseca (1741 - 1773), de Rohan (1775 - 1797) and von Hompesch (1797 - 1799). Also included: 1. A manuscript in Latin with portrait seal of Grand Master Jean-Paul de Lascaris-Castellar (1636 - 1657), dated Malta, 20.10.1649 (?), signed by the Vice-Chancellor. 2. A manuscript in Latin about the Prior of St Jean d'Aix en Provence, Paul Alpheran, with portrait seal of Grand Master Marc' Antonio Zondadari (1720 - 1722), dated Malta, 15. and 16.6.1720, signed by Manoel Pinto da Fonseca, Vice-Chancellor, later Grand Master (1741 - 1773). 3. A letter in French to Marquis de Muy, discussing the finances of the Marseilles Commandery, dated Malta, 13.9.1723, signed by Manoel de Vilhena, Grand Master (1722 - 1736). 4. A manuscript in Latin about the Prior of St Jean d'Aix en Provence, Melchior Alpheran, with portrait seal of Grand Master Ramon Despuig on the reverse, dated Malta, 30.4.1737, signed by the Vice-Chancellor. 5. A manuscript in Latin about the newly admitted knight Claude Charles Joséph de Gastel, with portrait seal of Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc (1775 - 1797), dated 16.6.1780, signed by the Vice-Chancellor. 6. A letter in Italian about food in Lent, from Grand Master Ferdinand von Hompesch (1797 - 1799) to Rome, dated Malta, 23.10.1797, signed by Hompesch. 7. Another letter signed by Hompesch, dated 27.9.1798, in an elegant, new, large-format folder. Partially slightly damaged, signs of use and age.

Provenance: From the personal effects of a high-ranking member of the Order.
