Description
Model 1716 "Roon" from the Eickhorn "Commander" series. The blade etched with oak leaves on both sides and, on ground with remnants of bluing, on the obverse cartouche (tr.) "From the garden town Haan to its Knight’s Cross winner Wilhelm Niggemeyer" and on the reverse depiction of the Knight’s Cross. Struck maker’s mark. Gilt knuckle-bow hilt with punched oak leaf decoration and national eagle, grip of black synthetic material with wire wrap, officer’s sword knot. Iron scabbard lacquered in black (partly repaired).Wilhelm Niggemeyer (1918 - ?) entered the Pioneer Battalion 26 in 1938, became Reserve Lieutenant in 1939 during the French Campaign, was awarded the Knight’s Cross on 18 September 1942 in the Battles of Rshew and Woronesh and was promoted to 1st Reserve Lieutenant, received the Oak Leaves on 17 May 1943, became Reserve Captain in 1944. From the end of the war until September 1945 he was prisoner of war in Allied hands.Condition: II - Questions about the lot?
