Description
Octagonal, smooth-bore barrel in 12.7 mm calibre with remnants of the original bluing. A new type of stamp on the left side of the barrel. Blued patent breechblock with platinum-inlaid mark "JOSEPH MANTON PATENT" and decorative platinum line. The vent hole also inlaid in platinum. Tropaion ornaments engraved on the tang. Finely engraved lock plate and swan neck cock, the lock plate signed "JOSEPH MANTON LONDON" and (defective) safety on the rear section of the lock plate. The spring with remnants of colour case hardening and set trigger. Walnut half stock with iron furniture and horn nose. Fine engraving also on the trigger guard. Blued guide rail for the ramrod soldered to the barrel before the nosepiece. Friction marks on the front sight and at the muzzle, no ramrod. Length 38 cm. Joseph Manton (1766 - 1835) was born in Grantham, ran his workshop and a temporary second workshop between 1789 and 1829, obtaining numerous patents between 1792 and 1825.Condition: II Questions about the lot?
