DescriptionThe small group of figures finely carved in lime wood, retaining the original paintwork. The seated St. Anne is depicted with a bonnet, a red dress and a gold-coloured cloak, the Virgin Mary with a book on her lap and the unclothed Infant Jesus standing. On a contemporary, octagonal pedestal. Height of the figure 25 cm, total height including pedestal 37 cm.
Named after a relief of Holy Family in the parish church in Biberach an der Riß, the Biberach Master, whose true identity is lost in the mists of time, is considered one of the most significant German woodcarvers of the Dürer era. A large version of the Madonna and Child with St. Anne, which is attributed to him, can be found in the collection of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (inv. no. L 2004/167).
Exquisite original condition, the original paintwork well preserved. The right thumb and forefinger of the Virgin Mary have been lost, the right arm of the Infant Jesus an old replacement. Questions about the lot?
