A large German stonebow, circa 1600

Description

Wedged, forged steel bow with inserted stirrup sight riveted in the centre. Hemp string with two wooden spacers. Iron, polished tiller subtly decorated with tendrils, hinged gaffle with stamped squirrel mark and manufacturer’s initials "MS". Handle cut in the shape of a shell. Complete case with one-finger nut (stiff). Fully functional button trigger, iron, profiled trigger guard. Wooden butt, richly decorated with filigree bone inlays, on each side an oval bone medallion engraved with hunting scenes. Horn butt cap. Bow and string well replaced. Traces of use and age. Width of bow 63 cm, overall length 72 cm. Rare, large, decorated specimen. Comparable items with the said marks are on display, for example, in the Schwarzburg Princely Armoury, the German Hunting and Fishing Museum in Munich and the Bern Historical Museum.
